PaperTouch is an UI component which allow easy integration of a flip book in any iPhone application. Just create an empty book and add to it some pictures of any kind (text or photo or both) and you are browsing them through the tip of you finger like you’ll do with a real book.

This is a great UI component for any eBook or photo viewer application or any application where you want an impressive way to browse information.

Here is a demo application aim to present the power of PaperTouch API. This application only requires a few lines of code to integrate PaperTouch. As you can see it can be integrated as any other UI component in a classic iPhone app.

The idea:

Sure digital picture have taken over the world of photography but we missed the paper touch feel of old school photo album. Nowadays most people just keep their photo collection stored in their portable device or camera so we though the iPhone touch capabilities was the perfect way to bring back a paper touch feeling to your photo collection.

Tap the middle of the screen to make the menu appears
Tap on the + icon to browse your photos
Tap on each photo you want to add (a sound confirms the photo addition)
Tap OK button when finished to return to Photobook and see your photos inside your newly create photo album.

This is the library mode of Photobook in which you can select the photo book you want to open. You can also create a new book (up to 9 books in current version) and delete an entire book. You can open a book buy using the menu or by double tapping the book you want.

OpenMap is the simple full screen map that quickly and efficiently help you to find your way. No extra features and unused option. If you’re looking for a complex turn by turn mapping application OpenMap is not for you. OpenMap is the map you launch when you get out of the subway and you want know where you are to find your next meeting location.

Wake up your computer from you mobile anywhere in the world.

- Extremely low bandwidth usage. Even if your data plan is pay per used based you won’t feel WOL usage at it only sends a few UDP packets to wake up your computer.

Disclaimer: Waking up your computer remotely requires configuration of various devices (network card, router, firewall …) depending on your configuration. WOL is a working application and CodeFlakes cannot be held responsible for any malfunction due to bad configuration. That been said, here are some tips to help you with the configuration process.

PC configuration

1 – Wake On LAN is disabled on most computer by default. Make sure this feature is enabled in your BIOS

2 – Make sure that Wake On LAN is also enabled in your network card driver settings.

3 – If you have a router/internet box/NAT you most probably have to add a port forwarding entry to tell the router how to broadcast the wake up packet to your local machine. WOL use port 7 so your have to add an entry like this:

ServiceName	FromPort	Protocol	ToPort	ToIP
WOL	7	UDP	7	192.168.1.10

Where 192.168.1.10 is replaced by the local IP of your machine.

Here is a screenshot of an actual router configuration. In this example the user didn’t specified the IP of the destination device since this router support the broadcast feature (255 = anyone of the 192.168.1.x devices). Be aware that not all routers work the same way and some need you to specify the exact IP of the target computer.

Phone configuration

1 – Create a new device entry from the Option menu –> Devices –> Add

2 – Edit the settings of the new created device by selecting it with the OK/SELECT key.

Appidemic gives life to your application!

With Appidemic your application can quickly spread from one mobile to another without you losing control on the distribution.

Appidemic is a library that gives super/viral distribution capabilities to a mobile application. It has been developed focusing on simplicity for both the API user and the end user, hiding all the complexity of the process.

Traditional distribution: controlled but slow

This is a scheme of traditional distribution where the application is downloaded from one central server. You keep control of the distribution but there are a lot of other products on the market and yours is only one of them. It’s hard to gain new users without expansive marketing campaigns.

Viral distribution: fast but uncontrolled

Viral distribution is the result of word of mouth and users recommendations to their relatives. This is the best and cheapest way to gain market shares but you can easily lose control. A typical uncontrolled viral distribution is the one of mp3 files and P2P file sharing where the original author is not credited for his hard work.

Appidemic distribution: FAST AND CONTROLLED

Appidemic gives the user the opportunity to easily send an application he likes to their relatives, thus favoring quickly spreading but keep your server aware of the spreading processes. With Appidemic you know where, how and who recommend your application.

Appidemic benefits:

Allow users to very easily recommend an application to his/her relatives.
Allow the application author to keep track of the viral distribution.
Appidemic is very easy to integrate to your application. It only requires 2 added lines of code!

How does it work ?

Including this library to your application gives your application new features allowing the end user to very easily send a download link to a friend he wishes to recommend the app to.

Look at the screenshots. Appidemic automatically add the “recommend this app” submenu to your application menu. Right now the Appidemic menu gives the user 3 different ways to send a download link: SMS, Email and Bluetooth.

Let’s say Marie likes AppidemicDemo and wants to recommend it to her friend Paul. She chooses the “Send by SMS” option in the application itself and here is what Paul receives in his inbox. He just have to click on the link to download and install the application on his phone.

Tracking

Appidemic does not send the application it self but a download link. This has several advantages. A typical uncontrolled viral distribution is the one of an mp3 file that users copy freely from one to another in the back of its author without limitation.

With super distribution through download link as used in Appidemic you can:

Track and measure the spread of the application
Make sure people download the latest version
Make sure you send a compatible app (J2ME, Symbian, Flash, …)
Track who recommends to whom

Example:

Marie likes application AppidemicDemo . AppidemicDemo includes Appidemic dll which allow Marie to easily recommend this application to her friend Paul by sending him a automatically generated download link. Let’s examine the link more closely:

When Appidemic generates the SMS to send to Paul it adds two URL parameters identifying herself and Paul’s cell phone. In this example Marie is identified by her IMEI (358082555555425) and Paul by his phone number (+3366550000).

Appidemic is a light weight DLL with a deliberately limited API. It requires only 2 lines of code modification to profit from Appidemic functionality.

No Symbian signing required

Appidemic only use limited capabilities that can be self signed, thus allowing virtually any application to include it with no extra time and cost lost in the Symbian signing process.

Everything is automated

Appidemic can be set and running for your application without customization. It automatically detects your application name at run time to generate links and user messages from default templates. Of course you can customize things if you want (download URL, messages, application name, etc) but you don’t need to.

CodeFlakes is a small team of experienced developers who approach programming as a craft. We do feel that industrialized, software development tends to produce heavy
cumbersome application and we think that handling development as a craftsman would do about his art is a better approach.

This approach is specially relevant as CodeFlakes specialized in mobile software development. Mobile development is soaring and every thing is or will be possible on mobile devices. But they are still limited by hardware and that is why optimization and quality programming is so important on those devices.

Experience

Most of CodeFlakes team has been developing on Symbian OS since the first Series 60 device (remember the Nokia 7650?). We have been following Symbian evolution for 10 years and some of us have even programmed for PSION devices the ancestor of Symbian OS. We have witnessed and participate to all the main releases until the current 3rd edition and the new Series 60 5th edition.

Since early 2008 and the release of the iPhone SDK we started developing on this new available platform. Some of use were already fluent with Objective C and the Mac platform so the transition was easy. Today most of our projects and contract are iPhone based.
